Propolis Result of Research

Propolis increasing daily stress and environmental pollution are heightening the importance of health maintenance for modern day families. In this big household, there's a health food that every family member consumes after meals.

[Interview : Byeon Gye-hwa, User] "This is called propolis. It's a health food that has been made by extracting the nutritious components from beehives."

Propolis is a nutrient-rich substance that has been gaining popularity as a home remedy. Formed when honeybees mix resins extracted from plants with their own saliva and enzymes to ensure survival and breeding, propolis is an effective anti-oxidant.

[Interview : Kang Hwa-ja, User] "I used to have very bad stomachache. But after drinking 3-4 cups of propolis everyday, the pain has been eased and I feel much healthier overall."

[Interview : Byeon Gye-hwa, User] "Since it has a slightly bitter taste, I usually mix it with juice or other beverages for my children. So far, they have had no problems drinking it."

The original extract of propolis can be difficult to consume as it is, because of its sharp and bitter taste. Thus, most people, especially young children, consume it by diluting it with water or other beverages.

[Interview : Kwon Yong-seol, User] "After a few drops in juice, the propolis tasted just like any other beverages. It tasted really good."

The family of Byeon Gye-hwa also uses toothpaste that has been made with propolis, known to be also effective in preventing paradentitis, gums disorders and bad breath.

[Interview : Byeon Gye-hwa, User] "I first started using the Probee Toothpaste because I had bad gums. Now my gums are much healthier than before. So I had my children use it too. They are now using it every day."

A mid-size enterprise that manufactures this nutritious propolis is Seoul Propolis.

Propolis is the next-generation substance with multiple biological functions, such as an anti-bacterial and an anti-oxidant that protect against germs.

[Interview : Jeon Ui-sik, Factory Manager Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.] "Bees protect their beehives from germs and other harmful insects by applying a mixture of their own saliva, resins and other substances that function like natural antibiotics to the opening of beehives. That mixture is called the propolis."

As a precious gift from nature, propolis has had an outstanding value as a natural cure and a healing agent for centuries. Understandably so, the amount of its production varies every year depending on the circumstances.

[Interview : Jeon Ui-sik, Factory Manager Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.]  "Because the propolis is a natural antibiotic, it is quite difficult to domestically secure a stable supply and demand. But depending on the rate of supply and demand, we can produce as much as 20 tons or even 30 tons of propolis at the most."

Propolis isn't a single substance, but a mixed material with multiple compounds. Up til today, propolis is known to comprise of about 149 compounds and 22 valuable minerals.

[Interview : Kwon Dur-han, Dr. at the Biomedical Research Center Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology ]  "Most of the biochemically effective materials in the propolis are polyphenol compounds. One of the compounds is called the flavonoid. As of today, flavonoids are known for their antiviral effects against HIV, poliovirus, HSV and influenza viruses."

Unlike existing domestic and imported propolis products, there are neither white residues nor wax floating when Seoul Propolis is dissolved in water. This is due to the company's WEEP method.

[Interview : Kim Na-rae, Researcher Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.]
"The WEEP process is a method that extracts the fat-soluble, high-molecular propolis with ethanol by transforming it into a low-molecular compound and then substituting it with water. This technology allows us to preserve the effective components contained in the natural state of propolis."

Then how much difference is there between regular propolis and Seoul Propolis[Interview : Kim Na-rae, Researcher Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.] "The propolis processed by the WEEP method is completely water-soluble. Thus, the resins and wax do not stick to the container and allow a soft taste and mild flavor. The low-molecurization of high-molecular flavonoids and resins increases the body absorption rate, which maximizes the anti-oxidative effect of the propolis."

In this store that sells Seoul Propolis, an increased number of health-conscious customers are looking for propolis.

[Interview : Lee Sun-ja, Shop manager ]  "Propolis extracts have been a steady seller for the past 5 years. Toothpaste, soaps and cosmetics that contain the extracts are also popular these days."

Propolis is now applied in a variety of products, from health foods and soaps to cosmetics.

[Interview : Lee Seok-bong, Customer ] "Whenever I give this toothpaste product as a present, the receiver compliments its high quality. So I frequently purchase this product as a year-end gift and for other occasions."

[Interview : Park Min-bae, Customer] "I have a friend who is undergoing chemotherapy. I've heard that propolis is good for chemotherapy, so I'm here to purchase one."

Having acquired a Japanese patent and a certificate from the American Food and Drug Adminstration, Seoul Propolis has earned an international recognition for its technology. It also had the honor of receiving the Ministry of Knowledge Economy Prize in 2010.

[Interview : Lee Seung-wan, CEO Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.]   "The business enterprises, schools and even the bee farms are now closely cooperating in the industrial process. The industry is actively developing through a network that conducts studies and marketing of the propolis together. And Seoul Propolis is at the forefront of these efforts."

Seoul Propolis, which is ambitiously making inroads into the wider global market, is already exporting to Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam and Malaysia.

[Interview : Heo Yong-gap, Executive director Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd.] "We are currently reaching out to the Chinese and Japanese markets and are already servicing North American and European countries. Thus, our goal for next year is to reach US$ 1 million in exports of health foods and cosmetics."

Propolis is nature's way to ensure the bees' health and well-being. Likewise, we sincerely hope that Seoul Propolis Co., Ltd. soon becomes a global enterprise that contributes to a healthier future of the world.{}
